There are over 11 million street kids
in India. Many are going to prison.
The Juvenile Justice Act 2000 requires all street kids to be institutionalised.
The conditions in most institutions are deplorable. Hygiene standards are extremely low. “There is clear evidence of
corruption and misuse of funds intended for the welfare of inmates of the detention facility,” Suhas Chakma, Director
of the Asian Centre for Human Rights.
The Coromandel Environmental Education Centre will:
- provide a home for the discarded youth of India
- educate and rehabilitate toward environmental awareness
- provide practical employment skills in the recycling forum
- provide a unique service for the wider environment
- give new purpose to the lives of the institutionalised
